Names link in post profile, by Dave on Mon, 8 Mar 10, 19:58. (63 views)

If you've put some entries into the name interests list you might like to put a 'Names' link into your post profile - like mine to the left of this post. You can do that User Posted Link. Simply put your member number into the 'Names' field. To find your member number, look at your own profile and your number will be next to your display name in the last part of the URL in your browser's address bar - e.g. mine says: user/1-dave/ (and 1 is my member number).

But see next message for something a lot easier.

Renton, by worlass on Wed, 3 Mar 10, 2:30. (88 views)
Death of an exciseman

I have been at a brick wall with one of my ancestors who "disappears" between 1841 and 1851 census'.

James Renton was an Exciseman born in Tranent, Haddington, Scotland on 29 April 1813. He takes up the occupation of exciseman in 1835 and his career takes him to Newcastle where he marries Jane Cowans in 1837 and then moves around Lancashire where his 4 children are born.

James' youngest child (of three surviving)is born in Prescott (noted as St Helens, Lancs on the 1851 census) at the end of 1844. In 1851 Jane remarries and is back in Newcastle upon Tyne.

I cannot find an entry for James' death and I'm hoping a search in the last place he was known to be "resident" will tell me happened to him.

grateful for any help

WHITE in St Helens, by Dave on Tue, 30 Jun 09, 1:07. (901 views)

Besides the four of us who have White as a name interest, are there any others who are interested? I think that Val was (are you still interested in White, Val?) and maybe some of the others with interests in the Fillinghams from town might like this...

The Whites go back quite a way in this town. The earliest in batch No C036661 on the IGI is a Thomas - son of William in 1730. On my own trail going back on mum's line Pye to Fillingham to White, I arrive at John White, born about 1782. This is where things get very frustrating. I'll list those early Whites and you'll see what I mean... I mean this list will be handy for anyone looking at early Whites in St Helens anyway.

Thomas White, son of William White, born 14 Mar 1730

Elizabeth White, dau of William White - born 9 Feb 1736, bap 20 Feb 1736

John White, son of William White - born 27 Jan 1739

Ralph White, son of William White, born 18 Dec 1743, bap 22 Dec 1743

Allice White, dau of Thomas White - born 14 Nov 1754, bap 24 Nov 1754

Will. White, son of Thomas White - born 17 Mar 1757, bap 27 Mar 1757

John White, son of Thomas White - born 5 Aug 1759, bap 26 Aug 1759

Thomas White, son of Thomas White, born 16 Jan 1762, bap 07 Feb 1762

William White, son of John White - born 18 Mar 1763, bap 10 Apr 1763

Alice White, dau of John White - born 1 May 1764, bap 12 May 1764

Elen White, dau of John White, born 21 Feb 1769

Mary White, dau of John White - born 14 Jun 1771

Esther White, dau of John White - born 12 Sep 1773

Ralph White, son of John White, born 22 Jan 1776, bap 21 Mar 1782

John White, son of John White - born 11 Jan 1782, bap 3 Feb 1782

John White, son of Thomas White - born 7 Sep 1782, bap 22 Sep 1782

John White, son of William White - born 4 Aug 1783, bap 24 Aug 1783

Esther White, dau of John White - born 29 May 1784, bap 27 Jun 1784

Ann White, dau of John White - born 23 Nov 1784, bap 12ec 1784

Ralph White, son of William White, born 08 Jul 1785, bap 30 Jul 1785

Mosess White, son of William White - born 04 Sep 1787, bap 23 Sep 1787

Now, look at those three Johns that I've made bold! He could be any one of them. The first two fit the date, but with the second one, the name Thomas wasn't passed on - which you'd expect, and the third one William is a possibility because our John named his first son William (who was born and died in 1803) and then he named another one William in 1815,

Here's what I've got for the following generation:

Children of John White and Elizabeth Huyton (1782(ish)) - married Rainford 8 Nov 1802

William, 10 Jul 1803 - died 4 Dec 1803

Elizabeth, 10 Oct 1807, bap 8 Nov 1807 - married William Fillingham at Prescot 24 Dec 1824, died 1895

Moses 14 May 1810, bap 17 Jun 1810 - married Ellen Birch at Prescot 24 Jun 1834 - died 1883

Hester, born 25 Jul 1812, bap 6 Sep 1812 - died ?

William, born 1815, bap 30 Apr 1815 - ?

James, born 1817, bap 2 Nov 1817 - married Mary (Smith? at Rainford 1841?)

John, born abt. 1821

Joseph, born abt. 1824 - think he married Ann Penketh in 1844 at Rainford

Richard, born abt. 1827 - married someone called Ellen.

Mary, born abt. 1829 - married? Noah Marsh. Maybe not - the children keep the White name.
I'm trying to map the subsequent generations and it'll eventually be available as a download for those with White interests in St Helens. Lots of Irish Whites came in in later years, messing things up even more.

I need to find out about the dad of the John who married Elizabeth Huyton.

Fraser Family, by anniebelle on Thu, 18 Feb 10, 5:18. (107 views)

I have just joined, so still working out how to interact with this site.

My GG grandmother, Sarah Ann Fraser was baptised at St Mary, St Helen's on 20 Apr 1845. She was the daughter of Robert and Ann Fraser (nee Hassard). Her older sister Sarah was baptised at St Mary on 11 Sept 1842 and was buried there on 1 sept 1843 at 12 months. Robert and Ann were born Co Fermanagh, Ireland abt 1810.

Robert and Ann are listed in the 1841 census as:

Robert Fraser aged 30, Labourer, born Ireland
Ann Fraser aged 25, born Ireland
William F aged 12, born Ireland
Jason F aged 8 born Ireland
Robert F aged 5 born Lancashire
James F aged 3 born lancashire
George F aged 1 born Lancashire

Their residence is Gerard's Bridge, Windle.

They again appear in the 1851 census as:

Robert Fraser aged 41, Labourer, born Ireland
Ann Fraser aged 43, born Ireland
William F aged 22, bricklayer,born Ireland
Joseph F aged 20, plumber, born ireland
Jason F aged 17, labourer, born Ireland
Robert F aged 15 born Preston, Lancashire
James F aged 12 born Windle, Lancashire
George F aged 10 born Windle,Lancashire
Sarah A F aged 6born Windle, Lancashire
also listed Susan Trainer aged 15,servant b Ireland and James Donnelly aged 22 labourer, b Ireland and George Fraser, Visitor aged 28, labourer b Ireland.

Again the residence is Gerard's Bridge

Most of the family came to Aust as Unassisted immigrants in 1859. I know for certain that Robert & Ann & children Jason, George, John born abt 1852 and Sarah came to Aust. Not sure about William, Joseph Robert or James.

I am interested in any information about the Gerard's Bridge area; what work they are likely to have been undertaking; any knowledge or connection with the sons who may have married and stayed in Lancashire or contact with anyone else who may be researching this family.

Any comments welcomed. With thanks, anniebelle.

Oops! I think I may have posted in wrong section but cannot see how to transfer. Can someone help? Anniebelle.
