St Helens Connect Forums Guidelines

If there are any announcements in the forums, please read them.

If you are unsure about how to use any of the message board's features, then please refer to the Help section. If that doesn't solve your problem then please feel free to post in the Ask Admin section and we'll try to help.

Posting. For the purpose of communication, please try to make sure that your message understandable and free from typing errors. TXT speak or unconventional language is not appreciated.

Please do not overuse the QUOTE functions. See the Quoting Guidelines.

Please do not SHOUT in messages. If you are unsure of grammar or general syntax, then please use all lower case instead of UPPER CASE.

Please read the notices at the top of the forum indexes (if they exist) in order to understand what the forum is about. The forum's title should suffice in most cases.

Posting pictures.

Members can post images that are hosted externally in any forum using the {IMG} tags (or the insert image button), but uploading (or attaching) picture files is only allowed in certain forums, those being:

Connect (general discussion)

Life Thru A Lens

St Helens Photographs.

Swearing and abuse in general

Generally, in most forums other than the Connect forum swearing is not appreciated. Please do not try to circumvent the swear filters in those forums. Any swearing or otherwise offensive posts in the St Helens Connected or in the Local and Family History in St Helens forums will lead to the deletion of such messages and the poster will receive a warning. If this warning is ignored then such posters will lose posting permissions in those forums. There is no need for such abuse and posts in those forums, which are meant to be informative and of a friendly nature.

Signatures

There is no need to write your name at the end of a post! This is a message board - not email or personal correspondence. 1) people can see who you are by the small profile at the side of your post, and 2) there is a function where you can automate a signature on this page in your profile settings..Offensive signatures will be removed - along with the ability to add a new signature,

Avatars and profile pictures.

Offensive avatars or profile pictures will be removed.

Email addresses in posts

It is definitely not recommended to include your email address in a forum posts  - unless you enjoy receiving plenty spam in your inbox. If you want someone to know your email address then tell them about it in a PM, or if available - use the email link in a members profile to send them some brief details.

Reporting Posts

If a member feels that the rules for a forum are being broken, then please use the REPORT button at the lower left-hand side of the message that you wish to complain about. The report will be forwarded to an area where administrators or moderators can decide on the best action (if any) to take.

Spam

Please do not use our message boards to post adverts for businesses - at the very least without contacting the site administrator first. While we are sympathetic towards the aims of  local businesses who want to expand their markets in these troubled times, this site is not a place where people can join for the sole purpose of advertising. Adverts will be removed.

Dual Identities and Aliases

We've all forgotten our login details on sites now and again and that can be a pain in the neck. Most sites, including this one, howevever, have a facility where you can click a 'forgottten password recovery' link  where you can reset or revalidate your login details. Some people are apt to using what they think of as being the easiest method - joining again using a different email address. This will be tolerated if you let us know. We can 'merge' the accounts of two memberships so that all previous posts will belong to the new account. Members who use two accounts concurently in order to manipulate other members and the board administration will be dealt with. Please contact admin if you would like two accounts to be merged.

Advice: If you are going to try to argue a point then personal abuse is not recommended. If you can't make your point without abusing your fellow posters then your abuse will most probably say more about you than the person that you're trying to belittle. This advice goes for most of the board, but the Connect forum is more relaxed than the others in this respect. So if you can't take it - please don't give it!

The main thing to remember is this: when posting you are adding content to our website. We like our website and we don't want it to have a horrible reputatioin. If you had your own interactive website you'd want to lay down a few rules. We're fairly liberal but there are certain lines which must not be crossed. Thanks for reading.
